Museum of Ancient Art exhibits painting by Luca Giordano ‘The Surrender’

The painting ‘The Surrender of the Elector of Saxony to Emperor Charles V’ will be inaugurated on Thursday at the National Museum of Ancient Art (MNAA) in Lisbon, coming from collections of the National Heritage of Spain.

According to the museum, the painting will be exhibited in the framework of the ‘Work Invited’ cycle, which receives works from other institutions, and the session will be attended by the Portuguese Minister of Culture, Luís Filipe Castro Mendes, and the counterpart of Spain, Jose Guirao, at 6:00 p.m.

‘The Surrender of the Elector of Saxony to Charles V’, by Luca Giordano (Naples, 1634-1705), painted about 1700, is an oil on canvas belonging to the National Patrimony of Spain.

The painting depicts Carlos V on the left in gold-plated armor and necklace of the Golden Fleece, and on the right the Duke of Alba, D. Fernando Álvarez, the commander of the victorious imperial troops, presenting the defeated elector of Saxony, John Frederick.

Born in Naples in 1632, the son of the painter António Giordano, Luca Giordano revealed a very precocious talent and became one of the most productive and renowned European painters of the seventeenth century, recalls the museum in a text about painting.

The importance of the city as an artistic center was marked by the presence of painters such as Caravaggio, Massimo Stanzione, Bernardo Cavalino, Francazano or Mattia Preti, who responded to the great works of the counterreformist church, under the patronage of the nobility attached to the Spanish viceroyalty.

“Luca Giordano grew artistically in this environment of artistic recognition and effervescence of the city and benefited him strongly,” becoming a famous painter of frescoes, who had made large series of paintings in vaults of palaces and Neapolitan churches throughout the 1680s.

He entered Spain in March 1692, and immediately devoted himself to the painting of the great vault of the staircase of the Escorial, a work in which he worked.

‘The Election of the Elector of Saxony before Charles V’ will be on display at the MNAA until January 13, 2019.

Created in 1884, the MNAA is home to the most important public collection of the country’s ancient art, painting, sculpture, Portuguese and European decorative arts from the Portuguese Maritime Expansion, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. number of works classified as national treasures.
