New exam identifies 50 types of cancer with 99.3% accuracy

The new blood test is capable of detecting 50 types of cancer in advance and their location in the human body, according to information released by the magazine Galileu.

Scientists linked to the Harvard University’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Mayo Clinic, both in the United States, reveal that the test may be instrumental in obtaining an early diagnosis, thus increasing the likelihood of survival.

In an article published last Monday, March 30, in the journal Annals of Oncology, the scientists explain that the method is based on genetic sequencing, in order to analyze chemical mutations in the methyl groups of the DNA of cancer cells. In this way, it is possible to assess whether the cancerous genes are active or inactive.

Galileo magazine explains that the researchers used the test to analyze the DNA of 6,689 blood samples, with 2,482 belonging to individuals with cancer and the remaining 4,207 to healthy people.

The result of samples from patients with tumors showed more than 50 cancer variants, including esophagus, pancreas, colorectal, ovaries, breast, gastric, gallbladder, bladder, lung, head and neck, lymphoid leukemia and multiple myeloma.

The level of accuracy of the blood test was an impressive 99.3%. In addition, when the tumor was identified, the examination hit the organ or tissue where the cancer originated in 90% of cases. This type of information is essential to understand how the pathology that takes millions of lives annually around the world can be diagnosed in a timely manner and treated.
