A LINEUP WITH HISTORY
Although a Primavera Sound lineup is a snapshot of a time and a place, it would make no sense without all those artists who got us here. NOS Primavera Sound Porto 2020 will welcome the grande dame of indie rock Kim Gordon with her first solo album under her own name, along with the forever young Dinosaur Jr, the champions of post-hardcore Jawbox, the extra-terrestrial Richard Dawson and of course Shellac who can’t miss their annual appointment with Porto. Also new legends in the making like the reborn Chromatics (whose frontman, Johnny Jewel, will also perform with his project Desire), Cigarettes After Sex with their unremitting whisper, DIIV in their quest for the perfect noise, Jehnny Beth in her first incarnation away from Savages and the tantric riffs of OM with Al Cisneros of Sleep.
A LINEUP WITH VISION
As well as being a reflection of the current times, the Primavera sound lineup works as a time capsule, like an oracle that predicts what your next favourite artist or band will be. At NOS Primavera Sound Porto 2020 you will be able to choose from the up and coming Jamaican music artist Koffee, Georgia and her very British relentless dance music, the new urban Latin diva Paloma Mami, the psychedelic soul and funk of Khruangbin, the endless pop archipelago of Penelope Isles and the promising voice of flamenco of the Spanish artist María José Llergo. You will also have the chance to heal with the melancholic guitars of Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, the uncontrollable scratched guitars of black midi and the psychedelic madness personified by Derby Motoreta’s Burrito Kachimba, from Seville (Spain) to the rest of the world.
A LINEUP WITH POP CHALLENGES
A lineup with pop in it? More like a lineup with new pop, pop that challenges the boundaries of what we know, that delivers surprises and makes us question ourselves. Artists like the force of nature Caroline Polachek presenting the fabulous Pang, the Japanese- British artist Rina Sawayama about to release her debut LP, the tireless experimenter Mura Masa introducing the tracks from his second album after his cancellation last year, the queer pop of Pabllo Vittar, Weyes Blood and her very particular poetic pop and Maggie Rogers demonstrating that you can make mass pop with personality: all of them will make it very clear that pop is back to save us, if anything it is stronger than ever.
A LINEUP WITH AN URBAN SIGNATURE
The urban hurricane that has dominated the world over the last few years will also land in Porto. The heads of their respective genres Tyler, The Creator and Bad Bunny will be accompanied by the new stars such as the elusive Earl Sweatshirt and the incredibly powerful Little Simz, the revolutionary strength of Sampa The Great and Jamila Woods and the stellar triumvirate of the Spanish urban scene formed by C. Tangana from Madrid, the godfather of trap Yung Beef and the international star Bad Gyal. The commitment to urban and Latin sounds will be completed by sets by the pioneer of reggaeton DJ Playero and the debut of the union between Florentino, Kelman Duran and DJ Python under the name of Sangre Nueva especially for this occasion. There will be perreo in Porto too.
A LINEUP OF DANCE MUSIC
For yet another year the area of Primavera Bits in the Parque da Cidade will be entering a parallel universe full of beats, sparkling lights and celestial rhythms. This year the electronic music area of NOS Primavera Sound Porto will be led by the techno oasis of Avalon Emerson, Special Request aka Paul Woolford and the frenetic sets by British DJ Josey Rebelle, but it will also allow you to lose yourselves in the indescribable back to back by Octo Octa and Eris Drew, to discover the sentimental electronic music by the South Korean artist Park Hye Jin, to dive into the infinite wealth of knowledge of DJ Marcelle / Another Nice Mess and to dance with the local heroes DJ Firmeza, MVRIA and Arrogance Arrogance. Everyday, until you just can’t move anymore.
A LINEUP THAT ALWAYS SPEAKS PORTUGUESE
With more or less accent, with more inclination towards the intimate with Montanhas Azuis, the unrestrained dance with Throes + The Shine or the electronic sounds with Holy Nothing, Parque da Cidade has never failed to welcome the most varied sounds created at home. From outstanding names like Arnaldo Antunes, who comes from the other side of the Atlantic with his Portuguese songbook that is living history from Brazil, to the new exotic but very national species such as the internet phenomenon Chico da Tina and the romantic and creative mind of David Bruno, NOS Primavera Sound 2020 shows, once again, that national music is on good shape and is well worth seeing.
