The initiative will bring together about 400 students, who are leaving for the UK, and their respective parents
Applications for bachelor’s or master’s degrees in the UK with 100% funded tuition open until June 30
Lisbon, June 26, 2019 – OK Estudante, an academic consulting firm specializing in Higher Education in the United Kingdom, organizes, on June 30th, at the Multiusos do Gondomar (Porto), from 9 am to 5 pm, the Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO). This is an event aimed at students from the north of the country who are joining UK higher education in September.
The PDO, is held since 2013, and aims to promote the presentation and interaction between students, especially those who go to the same university and course; to transmit information facilitating personal and academic experience in the United Kingdom involving subjects such as university structures, housing, work, safety, transport, culture and others; clarify the parents about what to expect and how to react to the most common situations, so that they provide the right help to their children; and demystification of the impacts of Brexit on academic life.
This event will feature representatives of the most prestigious British universities, including Coventry University, Middlesex University, University of Portsmouth, Solent University, Nottingham Trent University, University College Birmingham, Birmingham City University, Anglia Ruskin University, University of Hertfordshire and University of Sunderland.
In addition to the representatives, there will also be special guests, such as students already studying in the UK, “veteran” parents and three speakers – André Rosendo, Founder of OK Estudante, Maria de Castro, general director of OK Estudante, and Inacio Rozeira, TEDx Speaker, entrepreneur, traveler and founder of Chocolate Box, the new Portuguese travel agency that organizes escapes where the destination is a surprise.
This year’s innovation is the presentation of the national entrepreneurship program “START OK”, a partnership between OK Student, Be Brave and the Entrepreneurs and Mentors Association. This presentation will be handled by OK Student Founder André Rosendo and Brave Generation President Terry Hamill at 9:15 am at the PDO ceremony.
For Maria de Castro, OK Estudante’s general director, “The PDO is an extremely relevant event, as embarking on an academic adventure in a different cultural setting has impacts beyond the obvious in students’ lives. What OK Student intends with this initiative is to ensure support for parents and families and, above all, the integration of students in a different cultural environment, offering them the necessary tools to be successful in their academic, personal pathways professionals. Since 2008, OK Estudante guarantees that any Portuguese student, regardless of socioeconomic status or educational background, has access to a UK University with funding, having already placed more than 4,500 Portuguese students. ”
Brexit does not close doors to Portuguese university students
The British Government has recently announced that European Union students starting the course in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 school years will continue to have guaranteed support regardless of any decisions that might come from Brexit. Tuition funding will continue through the Student Finance program and the cost of tuition fees will remain the same as for British students for the duration of the course.
The United Kingdom continues to be a sought-after destination for Portuguese students: in 2017, when most countries experienced a drop in British higher education, Portugal saw a 24% increase in admissions – 230 more students – and the highest increase throughout Europe. In 2018, Portuguese demand was even higher: 535 more admissions than the previous year, an increase of 54%, according to reports the latest two reports from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) of the United Kingdom.
