The International Olympic Committee confirmed on Monday morning (30) that the Tokyo Olympic Games will take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021 and the Paralympics will be from August 24 to September 5. Both events had been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
In the official statement, the authorities say the new date was chosen in conjunction with the sports federations of the 33 modalities represented at the Games and the national committees of the participating countries.
It took into account three points to choose from: protecting the health of athletes and those involved, and supporting the containment of the covid-19 virus; protect the interests of athletes and Olympic sport; and the international global sports calendar.
With the postponement for a year, organizers believe it is time to deal with the constantly changing landscape and the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
