The show ‘Overload’, premiered at the D. Maria II National Theater in Lisbon in October 2017, won the Ubu Award for Best Theater Show of 2018, was announced today.
Taken on the scene by the Italian company Sotterraneo, ‘Overload’ was a co-production of this company and of the National Theater D. Maria II, integrating the cycle ‘Newborns’ in 2017, a project with which D. Maria II bets on young creations artists and companies.
The show addresses the background noise of today and attention as a form of alienation.
Sotterraneo was formed as a theatrical research group in Florence in 2005. In 2017, the company joined the European network APAP – Performing Europe 2020, of which D. Maria II is also a member.
Created in 1977 by the critic Franco Quadri, and currently organized by the Associazione Ubu per Franco Quadri, the Ubu Prize is considered to be the most prestigious theater award in Italy.
Tiago Rodrigues’ ‘Sadness and Joy in the Life of Giraffes’ was also nominated in the category of Best New Foreign Text or Dramatic Writing, winner of which was Richard Bean’s’ Afghanistan: Enduring Freedom’, Ben Ockrent, Simon Stephens, Colin Teevan and Naomi Wallace.
