Paredes de Coura Festival kicks off with Marlon Williams and King Gizzard & Lizard Wizard

The Festival Paredes de Coura today begins what it describes as a “careful and coherent” program, counting the first night with King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Marlon Williams, Linda Martini, The Blaze and Nuno Lopes.

By the banks of the Taboão River until Saturday, the organization promises that the festival will remain “faithful to the alternative spirit” that characterizes it and that has already led to Minho names like Arcade Fire, who return to Paredes de Coura 13 years later, Pixies, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Coldplay and Morrisey.

The first sounds of this year’s edition will be in charge of Grandfather’s House (at 18:30), a project presented in 2012 by Tiago Sampaio, joined by the voice of Rita Sampaio and Ana João Oliveira’s drums. The group will present “Diving”, their latest album.

New Zealand’s country, soul, folk and pop Marlon Williams takes to the stage at 19:40 on themes “laden with narratives surrounded by indie atmospheres”, marked by the artist’s latest work, “Make Way for Love,” in which Marlon sings “sings from broken heart” the end of a loving relationship.

An already known name of the festival, the Linda Martini, returns to the stage of Paredes de Coura at 21:30 today.

The Australian King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard return to Paredes de Coura at 23:15, after they performed there in 2016, with a sound that the organization says “refer to the psychedelic explosion of the 60’s.”

The Blaze, scheduled for Thursday at 00:45, was born when Jonathan asked Cousin Guillaume to help create a theme for the video of a school work. The name was adopted to mean something hot, strong, like love and hope, “something capable of destroying stereotypes,” resulting in a “hypnotizing, slow-developing sound that can be seen in Virile.”

Lisbon’s Conan Osiris (Tiago Miranda) performs at 02:15 already in ‘after-hours’ mode, while, at the end of the first day, Nuno Lopes, a professional actor and DJ since 2006, performs at 03:00.

The 26th edition of the Paredes de Coura festival continues until Saturday with dozens of artists ranging from the Russian collective Pussy Riot to the British Skepta, going through Arcade Fire, Slowdive, … And You Will Know Us By The Trail of The Dead, among many others.
