Pedro Costa won Locarno Gold Leopard with ‘Vitalina Varela’

Portuguese director Pedro Costa won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland with the film ‘Vitalina Varela’.

As announced on the festival’s website, Vitalina Varela starring in the film, was also honored with the Leopard for Best Female Interpretation.

Pedro Costa, who had already been honored at Locarno in 2014 with the award for best achievement for his film ‘Horse Money’, has returned this year premiering the film about a Cape Verdean woman who arrives in Portugal three days after her husband’s death. , after 25 years of waiting for a plane ticket.

Pedro Costa met Vitalina Varela during the filming of ‘Horse Money’, and even included part of his story in the film he was shooting.

But this now distinguished film is entirely dedicated to this 55 year old Cape Verdean. And the Cape Verdean actress also received the Boccalino d’Oro Award for best actress.
