Pope appoints Portuguese missionary as bishop in Tete, Mozambique

Pope Francisco appointed Bishop of the Mozambican diocese of Tete, Diamantino Guaço Antunes, who was until now Regional Superior of the Consolata Missionary Institute in Mozambique and Angola, according to information released today by the Vatican Press Office.

Diamantino Guaço Antunes, 53, is a native of Albergaria dos Doze, in Leiria. He studied philosophy at the Catholic University and holds a PhD in Dogmatic Theology from the Gregorian University in Rome.

He began to do pastoral work in Mozambique in the Maúa area of ​​northern Mozambique.

He has ordained a deacon in Cuamba at the end of 1993 and received priestly ordination in Fatima, Portugal, the following year.

According to Fatima Missionary, a media body of the Consolata Missionary Institute, this is the first Portuguese missionary of the organization to be elected bishop.
