First of crazy in the Stadium of Light. The selection of Serbia entered daring in the game and in the seven minutes managed to advance in the marker. Dusan Tadic took advantage of the penalty committed by Rui Patrício to make the first goal in the game.
The Portuguese team reacted immediately to the disadvantage, but by the means had another setback. After 29 minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo sent a free kick in high over the penalty box. The physical mallet left Ronaldo conditioned and the captain of the selection quickly signalled to the bank that he would have to leave. Fernando Santos then decided to launch Pizzi.
Even without Ronaldo, Portugal continued to pressure Serbia and even managed to reach the draw even before the break. In the 42nd minute, Danilo decided to pick up the ball, rose several meters on the pitch and, out of the large area, fired an authentic missile that only stopped deep in the Serbian networks. The Porto midfielder even scored a great goal and left the Estádio da Luz.
The second part started with a slower pace caused by the lower block of the Serbs. The visiting team opted for more moderate game management, but it always had a lot of quality in being able to penetrate the more defensive zone of the Portuguese.
Fernando Santos’s team tried to move the ball, but it showed clear difficulties when making the last pass to break the Serbian wall in front of the goal of Dmitrovic.
The entry of André Silva brought something new to Portugal and already without Dyego Sousa in the field, a more positional forward, and confused the markings of the Serbs.
72 minutes into the match, the visitors’ central line of defence had to look on as Rukavina broke through, making the score 3 – 0 for Rukavina. Szymon Marciniak quickly changed his decision after confiding in the remaining elements of refereeing, and in qualifying, there is no VAR.
Despite the doubtful decision of the match referee, Portugal continued to search for the second goal, but Serbia’s goal seemed to be divine protection until the final whistle. The tie would end up even at the end of the 90 minutes and Portugal returned to add another tie.
