Portugal defeats Cyprus and is in the U21 European Championship

This Sunday, the Portuguese under-21 national team secured a place for next year’s European Championship, defeating their Cypriot counterpart 2-1 in the ninth and penultimate round of the qualifying round, played in the Algarve.

The team coached by Rui Jorge entered, however, with the ‘left foot’ for this decisive match, since, in the second minute of the game, Panagiotis Artymatas went to the height to deflect to the bottom of the nets to the guard of Diogo Costa.

The turnaround began to take shape at the end of the first half, when Gedson Fernandes shot from the penalty spot, and was consumed in the second half, thanks to an imperial header from Diogo Queirós.

With this triumph, Portugal goes on to add 24 points, which guarantees qualifying as one of the best runners-up in the qualifying phase. In addition, he leaves for the last day with the chance to dispute the first place, directly, with the Netherlands, who have three points of advantage.

As for Cyprus, which was already mathematically unable to fight to qualify for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, it remains in the fifth and penultimate position of Group 7, with seven points won after nine rounds.
