Portugal goes to Leipzig Book Fair for the fourth time in a row

For the fourth consecutive time, Portugal participates in the Leipzig Book Fair with a program of readings, in which the writers Afonso Cruz, Ana Margarida de Carvalho, Joana Bértholo and Valério Romão collaborate.

According to a note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this program of readings begins on the night of March 20 and runs until Saturday, the 23rd.

Also invited are the poets João Luís Barreto, the recurring Raquel Nobre Guerra, who this year will see published its first German edition, and Luís Filipe Castro Mendes, at the invitation of Leipziger Literaturverlag, which presents a bilingual edition of the author.

Also included in the literary program are the Mozambican authors Lucílio Manjate and Mbate Pedro and also José Eduardo Agualusa, “the biggest name in Luso-Angolan literature”, the statement said.

Among the novelties this year is a conversation between editors, who will discuss the differences in editing work in Germany, Switzerland, Mozambique and Portugal, in the latter case by the voice of Zeferino Coelho, editor of the Caminho and considered one of the largest editors of the Portuguese-speaking literature, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Another novelty that the Fair of Leipzig reserves this year for Portugal is the participation in the official program of literature for children and youth.

The first day of the fair, March 21, has also reserved a session on the project “Portugal Country Guest of Honor of the Leipzig Book Fair 2021”, which includes the launch of the 2nd edition of the Journal of Letters in German and, and the public presentation of the Special Program to Support Translation and Editing, promoted by Camões – Institute of Cooperation and Language and by the General Direction of Books, Archives and Libraries (DGLAB).

In the national stand, more than 300 Portuguese-language literature titles will be available in Portuguese and German editions.
