Portugal is the guest country of the next Seville Book Fair, which will run from May 23 to June 2, 2019, in the Plaza Nueva, in the center of the city, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) announced today.
The formalization of the announcement will take place today at the Consulate General of Portugal in Seville, the ministry added in a statement.
Considered one of the main literary fairs in Spain, the Seville Book Fair has been in existence for several decades.
Portugal was a guest country of the Madrid Fair in 2017, so this participation follows the strategy of promoting Portuguese literature in the neighboring country, specifies the MFA.
The next Seville Book Fair is part of the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation, and in addition to the promotion of Portuguese literature and culture, national participation will include initiatives related to the journey begun in Seville in 1519, by Fernão de Magalhães.
The MNE, through Camões, Institute of Cooperation and Language, will support the participation of Portuguese authors in the Fair. The final programming of the Seville Book Fair of 2019 will be announced in March.
This year, Portugal was the guest country of the 32nd International Book Fair of Guadalajara, the second largest in the world (after Frankfurt), which closed in the Mexican city on December 2 and mobilized close to 820 thousand visitors and 2,280 publishers from 47 countries over ten days.
