Portugal promotes fruit and vegetable sector in Germany

Portugal Fresh and 37 Portuguese entities will attend the Fruit Logistics fair in Berlin between 06 and 08 February to promote the national fruits and vegetables, a sector that represents almost three million euros.

For the ninth consecutive time, Portugal has joint participation in the event taking place in the German capital, with 78 thousand people expected from 130 countries.

According to Portugal Fresh – Association for the promotion of fruit, vegetables and flowers of Portugal, this participation coincides with “a historical moment for the sector”, which is close to reaching 3,000 million euros of turnover, with the 50% of that amount.

Our forecasts are that we will reach 1,500 million euros in exports in 2018,” Gonçalo Santos Andrade, president of the association, said in a statement.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), exports of Portuguese fruit, vegetables and flowers reached 1,372 million euros between January and November 2018, equivalent to a year-on-year increase of 1%.

This growth is proof of the great competence and persistence of the national companies in the face of the many adversities registered during the difficult agricultural year of 2018. Achieving the achievement of reaching 1,500 million euros at this time is something that fills us with pride“, added the person in charge.

In turn, between January and November, sales to Germany advanced 1.3%, compared to the same period of 2017, reaching 89.4 million euros.

With the presence at the fair, Portugal intends to strengthen ties with the German market, with regular partners and with buyers from countries such as China, India and Indonesia.

Our traditional partners, such as Spain, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany and Brazil, will also invest a lot of time in our stand, tasting products and meeting with exporting companies,” said Gonçalo Santos Andrade.

Spain, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany constitute the top5 of the largest national export markets, accounting for 67% of the total exports.

According to Portugal Fresh, the event will be attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Capoulas Santos, and the Portuguese ambassador to Germany, João Mira Gomes.

Among the 37 national participants, there are 22 companies, such as Campotec, Vale da Rosa, Vitacress and Kiwicoop.

In addition to these, nine Portuguese partners will attend the Portuguese stand, such as the Portuguese Agrofood Cluster, as well as six associations, including Recast (brown) and the National Federation of Fruit and Vegetable Producers’ Organizations.

Portugal Fresh currently has 85 associates representing 25% of the value of the fruit, vegetables and flowers sector.
