Portugal wants more than doubling renewable electricity production

Portugal wants to more than double the production of renewable electricity by 2030, with growth being made mainly through solar, which will represent a quarter of the renewable generation, according to the National Energy-Climate 2030 Plan.

According to the 2030 National Energy-Climate Plan (PNEC) presented today at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, renewable energy sources should account for 47% of electricity consumption in Portugal in 2030, with an increase in installed capacity of up to 28.8 GW, which compares with 11.8 GW in 2015.

In the presentation of the PNEC, which provides for a total investment of 21,905 million euros, the Director General of Energy and Geology, João Bernardo, said today that the site will play a decisive role in increasing renewable capacity, GW in 2015, ranging from 8.1 to 9.9GW in 2030, although wind power continues to play a dominant role (between 33% and 35% of estimated renewable energy production by 2030).

In total, renewable production is expected to rise from 11.8 GW in 2015 to between 25.7 and 28.8 GW in 2030, according to PNEC 2030, outlined by Portugal’s goal of achieving neutrality in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
