Portuguese cooperation installs photovoltaic energy in São Tomé

The photovoltaic system installed at the Center for Educational Studies of Porto Alegre, more than 90 kilometres from the capital, began operating on Friday, allowing the institution to have power without interruptions, according to a diplomatic source.

Now they have the energy independence and this will allow empowering everything that this educational centre will do,” said the ambassador of Portugal in São Tomé, Gaspar da Silva.

The solar panels were purchased with funding from the Ministry of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security of Portugal and the Portuguese Embassy in Sao Tome, for an undisclosed amount.

The Center for Educational Studies of Porto Alegre (CREF) was founded in 2012 with support from the Portuguese Non-Governmental Organization for the Development of Laity and had its operation limited because Porto Alegre has no electricity.

The man dreams and the work is born and all this youth often dreams of very simple things, which is an island like São Tomé and Príncipe, is given, is complicated,” acknowledged the Portuguese diplomat.

With the installation of the photovoltaic energy system, CREF will extend its opening hours, providing training, qualification and professional qualification in different areas, access to information technology and services.

For the São Toméan youth, an educational centre is fundamental because it will always be with knowledge and education that the Sao Tome youth will find their future,” defended Gaspar da Silva.

In the basic school of Dona Augusto, located about 60 kilometres south of the capital, a children’s park was inaugurated by the Portuguese embassy. The infrastructure is frequented by 28 children from first to fourth class.

The mayor of Caué thanked the “offer” of the Portuguese Government and praised his “willingness, kindness, availability and benevolence” that allowed equipping these infrastructures.

In the village of Ribeira Afonso, in the district of Cantagalo, the ambassador of Portugal also inaugurated the small house of the Social Center for Child Support of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Sao Tome and Principe. A work that contemplates four classrooms and supports daily 120 children, from three to five years old, from Ribeira Afonso and from seven adjacent communities.

This Social Child Care Center provides two hot meals Monday through Friday.

All this comes to benefit the people of São Tomé, especially these children,” said Sister Lucía, the Santa Casa’s provider, recognizing that “these conditions are very necessary for the children to have a healthier and better environment.
