Portuguese project distinguished by the International Architecture Award

The prizes were awarded by the foundation’s scientific committee, selected from 10 finalist church and chapel projects, chosen, in turn, from 114 of 33 countries from around the world that competed for this edition.

The first prize was given to the Seliger Pater Rupert Mayer Church project in Poing, Germany, designed by the studio Meck Architekten, by the German architects Andreas Meck and Axel Frühauf.

Second place was the project for the Sanctuary Señor de Tula, Jojutla de Juárez, in Morelos, Mexico, designed by architects Derek Dellekamp, Jachen Schleich and Camilo Restrepo.

The jury was composed of the winners of previous editions of the International Prize for Sacred Architecture, including Tadao Ando and Cristian Undurraga, together with the president of the Frate Sole Foundation, Luigi Leoni.

The chapel designed by Joaquim Portela Arquitetos is described as a simple and compact building, in its form, integrated into the landscape and made part of it.

The classification of the winners was accepted by the scientific committee of the Frate Sole Foundation and approved by the foundation’s board of directors, which awarded the first prize 15,000 euros, the second prize 10,000 euros, and the third prize 5,000 euros.

The remaining seven finalist projects were recognized as “Ambassadors of the International Prize for Sacred Architecture” for the 2020-2024 quadrennium.
