Portuguese tie may even be … a good omen for the Euro’2020

Result against Ukraine was not the best, but seems something already habitual in the start of qualifications of the National Team.

It could be said that it was a ‘false start’ for Portugal. In the Stadium of Light, the team of the corners was not more than a draw with zero to Ukraine. A draw that is already the third consecutive and that has not happened since the group stage of Euro’2016 – Portugal added three draws in the first three games in the European Championship.

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to the national team but did not help the Portuguese side to win the first three points in Group B to qualify for Euro2020.

A not too happy return …

After nine months of absence, the captain came back. However, he does not have many reasons to smile. In addition to having tied Portugal and not even scored a goal, Cristiano Ronaldo faced one of his biggest drought in the Seleção. Since 2012 CR7 has not been without a bill for three games.

Against Iran and Uruguay, still in the ‘2018 World Cup, the Juventus striker was not able to shake the networks, nor now with Ukraine against a Pyatov who was giant in the goal. It remains to be hoped that the ketchup will come on Monday at the second meeting of qualifying for the 2020 European Championship against Serbia.

A result that is already a tradition

All the Portuguese wanted to start this qualifying round with a win against Ukraine. However, the draw was the final outcome, a result with which Portugal already seems accustomed to qualifying starts for European Championships.

Since 2007 the team of canines cannot win in the first game of qualification for Europeans. In that year he had a draw with Finland, in 2011 he was blocked by Cyprus (4-4), in 2015 Portugal was defeated by Albania and in 2019 the story with Ukraine … you know.

Four negative (or less positive) results, which had an outcome with motives for smiling. It is that Portugal may have always started with a draw or defeat in recent years, but it has always managed to ensure qualification for the respective European Championships. We can only hope that 2020 will not go away.
