The second edition of the International Festival of Puppets and Animated Shapes will take place from October 14 to October 31 in 11 associated municipalities of Artemrede, with part of the program chosen by groups of spectators.
Marta Martins, executive director of Artemrede, said today that the festival crosses the puppet show and the theater of objects “with other speeches and other areas”, targeting different audiences and taking place in different places – from theaters to streets and squares, but also associated with routes that take visitors to know monuments and heritage.
The 20 events programmed – 13 shows, four workshops, a light and music installation and two video installations created specifically for spaces in Tomar (district of Santarém) and Sobral de Monte Agraço (Lisbon) – will take place in Abrantes, Alcanena, Alcobaça, Barreiro, Moita, Montijo, Palmela, Pombal, Santarém, Sobral de Monte Agraço and Tomar.
For Marta Martins, the involvement of groups of viewers – designated by Visionaries – in choosing part of the programming, in a participatory process that involved viewing the available offers and a lot of discussion, mediated by local programmers, constitutes the “most innovative aspect” of the festival.
This process, which took place in five of the six municipalities of the Center zone, allows viewers to “understand how programming is built, what lies behind every decision, from technical needs to budget, to the need to respect a ceiling” , he said.
“It’s a step further in cultural participation,” he said, noting that the level of involvement has revealed a potential that municipalities themselves are willing to take to other areas of county programming.
Marta Martins stated that the Mantras presents “a diversified program”, adjusted to the size and the logic of each locality, seeking “to present quality projects in diverse formats, of various disciplines and for different age groups.”
As ‘ex libris’ of the program of this second edition of the festival, he pointed to the baroque opera with puppets “Wars of the Rosemary and Mangerona”, a co-production of Artemrede with the Cistermúsica that joins the Musicians of the Tagus and SA Marionetas, using puppets to a human scale, in a show that will be shown on October 14 at 4:00 p.m. at the Teatro-Cine de Pombal, on the 19th of that month at 9:00 p.m., at the Cineteatro Paraíso in Tomar, on the 20th, at 9:30 p.m., at Cineteatro S. João in Palmela and the following day, also at night, in Abrantes.
The director of Artemrede also mentioned the initiatives that combine the presentation of shows and visits to heritage sites, such as the Belgian company Tof Théâtre will present in spaces such as the Alcobaça Wine Museum (September 29 in the afternoon), the Center of Interpretation of the Torres Lines, in Sobral de Monte Agraço (October 5), the Cultural complex of Levada, in Tomar (October 6), or the castle of Pombal (July 07).
The festival also includes two films / installations commissioned by the director António-Pedro, a “Walk to Sobral” and “Levada Sem Fim”, which will remain permanently in Sobral de Monte Agraço and in Tomar, respectively.
Marta Martins stated that the funding obtained in the Operational Program Center 2020 allowed the Puppet Festival, organized by Artemrede since 2009, to take on the role of festival with an international component, with a strong connection to heritage and territory, believing that this new dimension of initiative will remain even after the end of Community support.
For the director of Artemrede, in addition to obtaining funding, the association has allowed “other scale” programming of the associated municipalities and facilitated the work together, leading municipalities to “combine resources and think in a more integrated way with their pairs, which challenges projects that alone would have difficulty performing. ”
The festival features performances by Toutito Teatro (France), Tof Théâtre (Belgium), Porto Marionette Theater, NEVER, PIA – Artistic Intervention Projects, Red Cloud Marionetas Theater, SA Marionettes with the Musicians of the Tagus, and Radar 360º, which closes the festival on Halloween (31 October) with “Festopia”, a show-party that will feature the community of Pombal.
The initiative starts on the 14th at 5:00 p.m., with the show “Muita Tralha Pouca Tralha”, by Catarina Requeijo, Antônio António, in the square António Luís Borges, in Sobral de Monte Agraço, the day in which Praça da República, in Tomar, receives, at 21:30, “Entremundos”, by the PIA – Projects of Artistic Intervention.
