Quartet of drummer Mark Guiliana opens today the 19th SeixalJazz

The quartet of Mark Guiliana’s American drummer and composer opens today the 19th Seixal Jazz Festival, which includes American pianist and songwriter Carla Bley, Aaron Parks and Kuba Wiecek, among other musicians.

The concerts take place at the Cultural Forum of Seixal, in a poster that the organization defines “of new talents and respected masters of jazz”, and that extends until October 27.

Today, Mark Guiliana, who has collaborated with Avishai Cohen, Brad Mehldau, David Bowie and Matisyahu, among others, goes on the Seixal stage and is accompanied by bassist Chris Morrissey, pianist Fabian Almazan and saxophonist Jason Rigby, musicians with whom recorded the album ‘Jersey’ (2017).

On Friday, the Portuguese drummer José Salgueiro presents his latest project, Collective Transportation. In addition to Salgueiro, the quintet consists of João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Guto Lucena, on the saxophone and bass clarinet, Cícero Lee on the double bass, and Mário Delgado, on guitar.

Aaron Parks Trio plays on Saturday, underlining the organization that “the Seattle pianist has been at the forefront of exploring the boundaries of jazz, and drew attention when he was part of the training of veteran trumpeter Terence Blanchard.”

The trio of saxophonist and composer Kuba Wiecek, made up of Michal Baranski on the double bass, and Lukasz Zyta on drums, plays 24. The next day he plays the Italian quartet Roots Magic, composed of Alberto Poppolla (clarinets), Errico De Fabritiis (alto saxophone), Gianfranco Tedeschi (double bass) and Fabrizio Spera (drums).

On the penultimate day, on display is the joint project of bassist João Hasselberg and guitarist Pedro Branco, “exploring a universe formed by compositions of both.” The musicians are accompanied by three other “notables of the jazz and alternative panorama of national music, Afonso Cabral (vocals), Afonso Pais (guitar) and João Lencastre (drums)”.

The pianist Clara Bley, who also performs at Jazz Center, with her trio, closes the show, performing with Andy Sheppard on the saxophone, and Steve Swallow on the double bass.

The organization points to Bley as “one of the true free thinkers of jazz”.

Down Beat magazine referred to its latest album, “Andando el Tiempo”, as “a masterpiece”.
