Researcher wins Fundação Mário Soares Award with thesis on Fado

The prize has a monetary value of five thousand euros.

The thesis elaborated in the scope of the doctoral program of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon proposed to study the naming of fado as a prayer, analyzing the religious elements that are recognizable to it, in the speeches in which the fado tells itself, considering prayer and religion, and the divergent representations and opinions that circulated in the public space.

In addition to the prize for the thesis of Cátia Tuna, two honorable mentions, ‘ex-aequo’, were also attributed to the thesis, also for a PhD in History, “Colonial Challenges in the Construction of the International Refugee Protection System: The Decolonization Processes of the Quénia, Algeria e Angola (1950-1975) “, by Ana Filipa dos Santos Guardião, defended at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon, and the master’s dissertation in Anthropology presented at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa with the title “Homosexuality and Resistance During the Portuguese Dictatorship: Case Studies”, by Raquel Afonso Louro.

The award jury was chaired by musicologist Rui Vieira Nery and made up of Bruno Sena Martins, researcher at the Center for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra, and João Carlos Louçã, researcher at the Institute of Contemporary History, Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of New University of Lisbon.

This is the 22nd edition of the Prize that aims to reward authors of academic or research works carried out within the scope of the History of Portugal in the 20th century.

The prize and honorable mentions will be delivered in a public session that will take place at the Foundation’s facilities, in Lisbon, during the first half of December, on a day and time to be determined, and taking into account the evolution of the pandemic situation.
