Ronaldo returns and possible debut of Felix in the summoned

The young player from Benfica should be elected for the first time by Fernando Santos.

Selector Fernando Santos announces on Friday the squad for the start of qualifying for the Euro2020 football, in a list in which is expected the return of Cristiano Ronaldo and the possible debut of João Félix.

After missing out on the group stage of the League of Nations, at the option of Fernando Santos and also the striker himself, captain Ronaldo is expected to return to the Portuguese team’s selection batch for the games against Ukraine and Serbia, which marks the start of qualifying for the next European and the defense of the title by Portugal.

Ronaldo last represented the Portuguese squad at the 2010 World Cup, which took place in Russia in a race where Portugal finished in the knockout round with a 2-1 loss to Uruguay.

Benfica, with eight goals since the start of 2019, João Félix, only 19, may appear in the choices of Fernando Santos, who last led the formation of the ‘quinas’ in November last year, in a draw with Poland (1-1), for the League of Nations.

Bruno Fernandes, who has been one of the figures of the I Liga in the service of Sporting, is expected to also join the squad and should have a new opportunity to convince Fernando Santos.

The 24-year-old midfielder has sometimes been betting on the national team but, with Portugal’s jersey, he has never been able to reach the level he has already demonstrated at Sporting Clube de Portugal and that led him to be voted for best player in the league last season.

Returning to national football and to FC Porto, Pepe, even at 36 years of age, should remain one of Portugal’s main defenses in a position where, almost certainly, he will continue to have the company of José Fonte, Lille, at 35, and Rúben Dias, a much younger player, with 21, despite the mistakes made in recent matches at Benfica.

Like Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, increasingly influential in the Manchester City game and the Portuguese national team, is another of the certainties in Fernando Santos’ choices.

The announcement of the call will take place on Friday, at 12:30, in the City of Football, in Oeiras.

Portugal begins to defend the European title won in 2016 in France, against the selection of Ukraine, on March 22, at the Estádio da Luz, in Lisbon, receiving three days later Serbia in the same place, with the beginning of both games scheduled for 19:45.

The national team will play Group B qualifying for the UEFA European Championship of 2020, which also includes Lithuania and Luxembourg.

For the first time, the final round of the competition will take place in 12 cities in 12 different countries, with London hosting the semi-finals and the final.
