São Mateus Fair in Viseu starts on August 8

New pavilions, a giant wheel of 30 meters and decorative light that honors the gastronomy beirã are some of the novelties of the 627th Fair of São Mateus de Viseu, that starts on 08 August.

This year’s edition of the secular fair, which was publicly presented tonight, will also feature the first São Mateus bride and groom, 90 new stands and a concern to continue to reduce plastic.

All this is part of the revitalization and modernization project that the municipality and Viseu Marca (responsible for the management of the fair) have been developing since 2016.

The new architecture on the pavilions of the pavilions this year will be the great novelty of the spaces, with new furniture, shading structures and flowerbeds giving a different look to the central artery of the fairground.

As far as the amusement area is concerned, a new giant wheel will be installed, with 30 meters, that is, double the height of the previous one.

The mayor of Viseu, Almeida Henriques, underlined the effort that has been made in the qualification, modernization, and security of Campo de Viriato, where the event is held.

There will also be 90 ‘stands’ of exhibitors, with new wooden structures, as part of a project developed by Viseu Marca, whose objective was to contribute to a more qualified and appealing environment with better working conditions, safety, and hygiene.

The São Mateus Fair, which will last until September 15, will celebrate the declaration of Viseu as the National Destination of Gastronomy in 2019.

The porticos of light of the four entrances of the enclosure will be allusive to icons of the gastronomy of the region and, for the first time, the visitors will be able to taste the first official dessert of the fair, created by the chef Diogo Rocha, that joins the tastes of the Rossio lime trees , the hazelnuts of Viseu and the Bravo apple of Esmolfe.

The fair’s program includes a wedding, on August 15, with the first couple from São Mateus, Natércia and Rodrigo, to have a guaranteed party in the venue.

The municipality and Viseu Marca promise “39 days of unmissable programming”, with a more international and intergenerational poster.

Ludmilla, Natiruts and Gipsy Kings perform at the three major international concerts of the 2019 poster, with ticket pre-sales exceeding the organization’s expectations.

These include national names such as the record holder of the 2018 edition, Richie Campbell, the bands Xutos & Pontapés and UHF, Pedro Abrunhosa, David Carreira, ÁTOA, Fernando Daniel, Badoxa, Piruka, and Jimmy P, among others.

According to the organization, “the programming results in a mix of trends, styles, and tastes to think of the various audiences, over 39 days,” of which 15 will be paid entrance.

The São Mateus Fair will also have a new mascot, Fisca, which will be accompanied by Maria Tata, two “travelers from the past” who will tour the grounds in August and September, interacting with visitors.

In the opinion of Viseu Marca’s managing director, Cristina Paula Gomes, “the São Mateus Fair is more modern than ever, very competitive and fulfills growing sustainability ratios.”

For three consecutive years, the S. Mateus Fair has surpassed one million entries, a target that remains for this year.
