Sasportes, a dance historian, former chairman of the UNESCO National Commission, who served as the Press and Cultural Adviser at the Portuguese embassies in Rome, Washington and Stockholm, was director of the ACARTE Service of the Gulbenkian Foundation, and had already been distinguished with the first two degrees of this Order, that of knight and officer.

The Order of Arts and Letters aims to reward people who are distinguished by their artistic or literary creation, but also those who contribute to the influence and development of arts and letters in France and the world.
