Six Portuguese nominated for Luka Awards in the field of music and fashion
Singers Mariza, Carminho and Luís Gomes, fashion designer duo Marques Almeida and dancer Nuno Pesqueira are the Portuguese nominees in different categories for the UK Latino awards, Lukas-Europe Latin Entertainment.
Carminho is nominated for ‘Best Album’, with her latest album, ‘Maria’, alongside names like Buika, Vitto Meirelles, Yilian Cañizares and Omar Sosa or Rosalía.
Mariza is nominated for the best concert (Concert by the International Artist of the Year) for her performance at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
The two Portuguese fado singers are also candidates in the category of acting in the fusion area (‘European Classical/Jazz/Fusion Act’), alongside João Bosco, Los Aurora and Buika, among other performers.
In the category of best concert are also nominated Brazilian musicians Bebel Gilberto and Milton Nascimento, for performances in the English capital, Union Chapel and Barbican Center, respectively, Roberto Carlos for the show at Wembley Arena, Seu Jorge for performance at Hammersmith Apolo and Gilberto Gil, for the concert at the Shepherds Bush Empire, also in the British capital.
Portuguese tenor Luís Gomes is nominated for the Lukas ‘Vocalist of the Year’ Award.
The lyricist has worked with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Opera House, where he debuted in 2015 as Fenton, from Verdi’s “Falstaff” opera.
The Portuguese fashion designer duo Marques’Almeida, formed by Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida, is nominated in the category of “Fashion Designer of the Year”, among 12 candidates, including names like Maria Cardenas, Luna. Del Pinal, Loula Guarin and Raquel Villadares.
This duo was awarded in 2014 in the Emerging Talent – Women’s Fashion category at the British Fashion Awards and in 2015 received the LVMH Award for Young Fashion Designers. In 2018, Marques’Almeida were finalists in the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund award.
Since 2010, the brand has been a regular presence at London Fashion Week, where it performed last weekend. This year they also took their creations to Paris Fashion Week and Portugal Fashion, in Porto.
Dancer Nuno Pesqueira, who excelled internationally in the performance of Kizomba, in the pair formed with the Spanish Sara Lopez (Sara Lopez & Nuno Pesqueira) is nominated, with his partner, in the category of European Tropical Dance performers of the Year “), alongside, among others, the Spanish Adrian & Anita, the Italian group Alafia and the French Thierry & Cécile.
The awards also include the category of best performance of Brazilian music (‘Brasilian Act of the Year’), with names such as Aleh Ferrerira, Alvorada, André Santos, Drum of Ax, Bí And The Amanas, Big Ben Jorge, Celeste Caramanna, Da Can, Iolanda Costa, Luis Morais Sextet, Luis Moretto, Nina Miranda, Free Drums and Viramundo.
The Lukas-Europe Latin Entertainment Awards, in its seventh edition, were created by the British magazine Latino Life, to distinguish the Latin expression on the British stage, between Portuguese and Spanish speaking artists and creators, as well as in the sports sector.
The prizes, awarded by a combined jury and public vote, will be presented November 6 in London at The Bloomsbury Ballroom.
