Tabaqueira donates 50,000 masks and 1,000 liters of alcohol gel to 100 IPSS

Given the current pandemic context, Tabaqueira, a Portuguese subsidiary of the Philip Morris International Group (PMI), decided to support those who work directly with the population and help a hundred Private Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS), all over the country , by donating 50,000 masks and 1,000 liters of gel alcohol.

The disinfectant solution is produced by Tabaqueira at its factory in Albarraque, municipality of Sintra, according to the formulation recommended by the World Health Organization.

Miguel Matos, Director-General of Tabaqueira says that “this is an unprecedented crisis that affects institutions and populations from north to south of Portugal. Since its inception, we felt that we could not remain indifferent to this situation and, therefore, we have given support in several ways.
When we realized that we could produce alcohol gel in our factory, we didn’t hesitate. We believe that, at this moment, we all have to mobilize to help. We selected 100 institutions that we know that work directly with the most vulnerable populations and for whom this support is important”.

With a comprehensive sustainability vision, Tabaqueira seeks to be an active agent in its extended community, which includes interactions not only with employees, partners, customers and suppliers, but also with many hundreds of organizations with which it relates in the context of its activity.

Therefore, privileging the open and regular dialogue with the various stakeholders, Tabaqueira considers that it has a relevant role to play in its community.

For this reason, in the extraordinary context imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the company sought solidarity and promoted numerous initiatives aimed at combating this pandemic and helping the most vulnerable sections of our society.

These external initiatives were reflected in monetary and in-kind contributions aimed at specific needs identified, both at the level of hospitals in the National Health Service (SNS) and at the level of IPSS, and also by their business partners, namely through donation protective equipment.

With the same purpose, Tabaqueira also joined the campaign “Unidos por Portugal”, an initiative of SIC Esperança in partnership with the Portuguese Football Federation.

In addition to the various support actions promoted by Tabaqueira, which also included the temporary assignment of a vehicle to the Non-Governmental Organization Médicos do Mundo, several employees of the organization launched initiatives in the context of a platform that PMI provides for the submission of projects with solidarity for its workers.

It should be noted that Tabaqueira, sharing the concerns of the Municipality of Sintra, where its factory is located, distributed more than 6,800 meals to the most vulnerable population of that municipality, during the period of social confinement.

Additionally, it also supported the production of protective visors by the FabLab of Sintra, which were later distributed by IPSS. This union of efforts is also joined by the joint action of workers and consumers in support of the Food Emergency Network against hunger at the national level.
