The Teatro Municipal Joaquim presents Bojador, with text and staging by Ana Perfeito by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andersen, for the Teatro de Noroeste – Centro Dramático de Viana. The show will take place on the 24th and 25th of October, Saturday at 4pm, and Sunday at 11am.
Can’t you go beyond the Bojador? The polished question that terrified the spirit of those who wished to go further, to the lands only dreamed of that promised endless wealth and still without an owner, was reinforced by the widespread belief that the fearsome geographical point was populated by sea monsters who punished sailors and ships with descent into the abyss of the seas. But, as in all adventures, someone saw farther and dreamed of doing the impossible, against all recommendations. Who was it?
In 1961, a writing mother and one of her five children embark on an adventure of self-discovery. From a play she started to write, which portrays the year 1434 and the passage of Cabo Bojador (for many impossible), a set of challenges arises, on an improvised stage: a room with a window facing the World. Discovering this world requires only going beyond fear and, together, always trying to go further!…
Premiered in the year of the celebration of the centenary of the birth of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen (1919 2004), whose official program was integrated, created from the homonymous work and biographical elements of the poet’s life, the show relays, rewrites and adapts O Bojador, play published in 2000 and which is part of the National Reading Plan. Putting Sophia’s life and the stories of Portuguese maritime history in dialogue, Bojador, in a staging by Ana Perfeito, gives the scene to fear, showing that it is possible to overcome it.
