Guitarists Bruno Santos and André Santos, Mano a Mano, kick off the ‘A Arte do Duo’ series on December 11 at the Hot Clube de Portugal in Lisbon, which includes six concerts of different pairs, was announced today.
The cycle of six concerts ‘The Art of the Duo’, which, as the name implies, privileges this type of training less common in the usual programming of the Hot Club, is one of the highlights of the programming of the room of the Square of Joy for December, which was released today.
‘The Art of the Duo’ begins on December 11 with the pair of guitarists and brothers André and Bruno Santos, who started playing together ‘naturally’, still in Madeira, where they grew up.
In 2014, they published the first disc of the project Mano a Mano, homónimo, with recourse to a campaign of ‘crowdfunding’. The second work, ‘Mano a Mano vol.2’, was published in October of last year.
The cycle continues with Cirera / Lencastre, a duo that joins the Spanish saxophonist Albert Cirera and the Portuguese drummer João Lencastre, on 12 December, perform the Belgian Ivan Paduart (piano) and Patrick Deltenre (guitar), who will present the album ‘Hand in Hand’, which will be released on November 23.
The fourth concert of ‘The Art of the Duo’, on December 18, brings together singer Rita Maria and pianist Filipe Raposo, who will present the album ‘Live in Oslo’, recorded at the end of last year in the Norwegian capital and edited in August of this year.
On December 19, on the stage of the Hot Club the project ‘Silent Words – The music of Cole Porter’, guitarist Afonso Pais and pianist João Paulo Esteves da Silva.
‘Silent Words’ was born in 2014, when the Vila Flor Cultural Center (CCVF) in Guimarães gave a ‘carte blanche’ to João Paulo Esteves da Silva, within the framework of the Cycle of Jazz Stories in Portugal, to present a project.
The first concert took place on November 10, 2014, in Guimarães, but only last year the musicians decided that they would move forward with the project, which was presented last November in Lisbon, in two shows that were recorded for later editing on disk.
The “Duo Art” cycle ends on December 20th with Jeffrey Davis (vibraphone), born in Canada in 1981, who lives in Portugal since 1985, and the Italian Federico Casagrande (guitar). The musicians edited together in 2016 ‘The Settlement’.
The Hot Clube de Portugal program for December also includes performances by Mário Laginha Trio (Mário Laginha on piano, Bernardo Moreira on bass and Alexandre Frazão on drums), on December 06 and 07, and the trio Elas and Jazz (Marta Hugon, Joana Machado and Mariana Norton, accompanied by João Pedro Coelho on piano, Romeu Tristão on double bass and André Sousa Machado on drums).
For January, 04 and 05, the show ‘The Music of Duke Ellington’ is already scheduled, by the Hot Club of Portugal Jazz Orchestra, directed by Pedro Moreira.
