The government authorizes 1,903 hectares for new vineyard plantations

The Government has defined a maximum total national area of 1,903 hectares (ha) to be allocated in the distribution of permits for new vineyards in 2019, according to an ordinance published today.

The maximum total area to be allocated at the national level is 1,903 ha,” reads the diploma published today in Diário da República and sets the rules and eligibility criteria at the national level and for 2019 and priority and administrative procedures to be observed in the distribution of permits for new vineyards.

The Government states in its diploma that “the good performance” of national exports and the “growing awareness and international recognition of the identity and quality” of Portuguese wines, coupled with the “gradual increase prospects” of demand on the world market, justify an incentive to increase the supply capacity of the wine sector and the planting of new vineyards.

Some of the limits of new plantations defined by the diploma are 4.2 ha (ha) in the Douro Demarcated Region (RDD) or 800 ha for the production of wines with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) or Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in Wine Region of Alentejo, the same hectares authorized in 2018.

It is explained in the diploma that, “because it is the fourth year of application of the system of authorizations for vineyards, maximum ceilings for growth in certain regions are set for this year, while always maintaining a minimum level of to protect the legitimacy of the PDO and PGI regime itself as an immaterial public good.
