The Guardian published an article on António Variações

“A country boy, hairdresser and pop star, Variações silenced homophobia with free expression – and has been reborn as an icon 35 years after his death”

The newspaper recalls the musician as the first gay icon in Portugal, who shook the country from apathy in the post-revolution after the 41-year reign of fascism.

Stressing that the artist has died 36 years ago, the publication highlights that Variações was responsible for the beginning of a collective gay conscience in Portugal.

“Variações’s spirit has survived, and become synonymous with Pride month celebrations each June in Portugal.”
