The design of the exhibition “Industry, Art and Letters – 250 Years of the National Press”, inspired by the traditional type box used in manual composition, portrayed the history of the printed word in Portugal.
The list of awards from FBA., A design company based in Coimbra, is already long, but the recent Silver Award (the golden one was not awarded) from the European Design Awards to the exhibition “Indústria Arte e Letras. – 250 Years of the National Press “is particularly relevant because it is a project about the history of the printed word in Portugal.
The design of the exhibition resulted from the collaboration of the FBA. (João Bicker and Rita Marquito) with atelier Aires Mateus Arquitectos (Francisco Aires Mateus, Bianca Salmoiraghi and Gloria Binato).
“Industry, Art and Letters – 250 Years of the National Press” was on display between September and November 2019, in the arena of the National Museum of Natural History and Science, in Lisbon. It was one of the most representative projects of the celebrations of the 250 years of the National Press, where its editorial, artistic and industrial history was presented.
The exhibition was developed over ten centers and, following a chronological narrative, crossed several dimensions: from its industrial path to the editorial activity, from its artistic component to the formative role in the area of graphic arts, including its public mission in different contexts politicians.
Curated by Inês Queiroz, “Industry, Art and Letters – 250 Years of the National Press”, she presented the history of the National Press as the history of the printed word and had in its nuclear objects the letter and type.
That is why the typographic component has acquired a prominent position, as if it were a large type catalog, showing and informing the versatility of the form of the letters and their authors.
