The Museu do Oriente has a creative family challenge

The collection of the Museu do Oriente includes, in the Kwok On collection, an impressive set of masks from all over Asia. Far beyond the playful aspect that we recognize in the West, masks in Asia fulfill important symbolic functions in cults and religious rituals.

The challenge that the Museu do Oriente has for you is to build a mask, inspired by a piece from the Museu do Oriente, the Chandrabhaga, used in the representations of Chhau, a theater danced with masks from Seraikala, in India.

To wear on your face or brighten up your home, have fun with the family with this #desafiocriativo

The basis for building the mask is an empty cereal box and for decoration, anything goes! Remains of fabrics, wool, ribbons, papers of all types and texture. If you can, use empty packaging, newspapers already read, bags and advertising pamphlets for recycling. Buttons, glitter, inks and markers are other options.

Finally, don’t forget glue and scissors, pencils and erasers.

See how to do it in the video published by the Museum on Facebook.

How to make:

1- Install your work base and gather the necessary materials

2- Open the box and spread it out. Select the face to be used for the base and cut, keeping the side sections (for the ears).
* Tip: Do not throw away the rest of the box, it will be useful to create decorative elements *

3- With a pencil, draw the outline of the face and then cut it out.

4- With a pencil, mark the place of the eyes, nose, mouth and hair. If you plan to use the mask, pay attention to the positioning of the eyes and cut out the holes.
** Tip: using a template, it is easier to obtain eyes with the same shape and size *

5- Cut, glue or paint the elements, giving free rein to the imagination and materials at your disposal. The Chandrabhaga of the Museum is just a starting point, let yourself be carried away by the process!
*** Tip: For headdress elements, use what’s left of the box and cut out shapes of your choice. You can paint them or cover them with fabric *

6- To try on the mask, use a hole punch or scissors to open holes in the “ears”, pass an elastic through the holes and secure with a knot at each end.
