The President of the Republic attributed to the São João National Theater, in Porto, the title of honorary member of the Order of Merit

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, attributed to the São João National Theater (TNSJ), the title of honorary member of the Order of Merit, highlighting the work developed by the institution.

The President of the Republic decided, with the support of the Prime Minister, António Costa, the title of honorary member of the Order of Merit, in order to value the work of the institution that for more than 100 years has been striving for modernity and openness.

This year, the TNSJ marks the centenary of the building, designed by the architect Marques da Silva, with special guided visits to the structure that will close for works in 2021.

At the official ceremony, the Minister of Culture, Graça Fonseca, said that this is a party night in which this artistic, historical and architectural heritage of the city of Porto is celebrated.

Graça Fonseca also stressed that it was necessary to honor the history of the São João National Theater and that there will be a modernization of the space with a set of rehabilitation works with an investment of more than two million euros.

Inaugurated on May 13, 1798, the São João National Theater was the first building built from scratch in Porto for the exclusive presentation of cultural shows.

The 2.3 million euros investment will allow rehabilitation works to be carried out on the interior of the building, both in terms of fire safety and in terms of energy efficiency, including the restoration of architectural elements.

The operation also involves the renovation of the technical park of the São João National Theater and includes the reinforcement of the institution’s activity during the centenary.
