“There was a lot of talk about Portugal” at the dinner offered by Macron

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said today that “much of Portugal” was spoken at the dinner hosted by the French President, Emmanuel Macron, to the world leaders participating in the centenary celebrations of the Armistice.

“There was a lot of talk about Portugal, there was a lot of talk about Portugal in Europe and Africa and even the connection to Latin America,” Marcelo told Portuguese journalists after dinner.

“And we spoke very well and very much of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres,” he added.

According to the President, the dinner mood at the Quay d’Orsay Museum was “celebrating peace rather than war” and was guided by “a distension” that “it would not be possible to imagine, among those who are there, many of the hard positions they have from time to time, day in and day out. ”

“There was no such thing today and I hope there will be no tomorrow,” he said, referring to the ceremonies marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I and the Peace Forum.

Among those present at the dinner were US President Donald Trump, who has already announced that he does not participate in the Forum, with whom the Portuguese President said he had “an opportunity to exchange some words”.

Marcelo declined to say what they said, only referring to “the weather was as good as it had been in Washington,” when he visited the White House and met with Trump at the end of June.

Asked if he invited Trump to visit Portugal, the President said only: “Let’s see, we’ll talk about it someday.”

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is in Paris to take part in the celebrations of the centenary of the Armistice.
