Tribute to Rui Mendes

Almada Festival

The Tribute of the Festival of Almada recognizes its invaluable contribution to the development of a new way of being in the theatre, in the cinema and on television. A participation that has always been marked by a strong civic motivation, which makes Rui Mendes one of the most significant public servants of the performing arts in Portugal.

It is the first time that Nuno Carinhas has directed a creation for Companhia de Teatro de Almada: a play by Elfriede Jelinek that carries a significantly historical memory (in which the survival of the fascist mentality stands out) but also autobiographical. The title refers to the Schubert cycle, about poems by Wilhelm Müller, which the author herself frequently accompanied on the piano. “I think that no work of art has ever meant more to me,” wrote Jelinek about Winterreise in the speech of thanks for the Mülheim Prize for Dramatic Authors given by the text Winter Travel. A play. In addition to the author’s revisiting elements of her own life, the text addresses recent episodes in Austrian life: the bankruptcy and rescue of the bank Hypo Alpe Adria, or the abduction of Natascha Kampusch, the ten-year-old girl who was held hostage for more than eight years.
