UC leads international consortium for pioneering study on psychological resilience

Participation involves filling out an anonymous and confidential online questionnaire.

The University of Coimbra (UC) leads an international consortium that will study compassion, social connection and resilience in the face of trauma during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coordinated by Marcela Matos, from the Center for Research in Neuropsychology and Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention (CINEICC) of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra (FPCEUC), this study, pioneered by the focus of the analysis and the multicultural scope of the team of researchers and the target population, involves researchers from 18 countries around the world – Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, United Kingdom, Denmark, Slovakia, United States of America, Canada, Australia, Japan, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Mexico and Brazil – from academic institutions, companies and non-profit organizations, such as The Compassionate Mind Foundation (United Kingdom).

Considering that the crisis associated with COVID-19 has harmful effects on both the physical and mental health of people around the world, the objective, explains Marcela Matos, “is to examine the psychological impact of this pandemic and understand what factors can be protective against its negative consequences on mental health”.

This study has as its target population individuals from the general population (aged between 18 and 80 years), health professionals and people in management positions in companies and institutions.
