Venice Festival starts today and features Portuguese films

This edition of the Italian festival is presented as the first, of a major world event, taking place in the traditional molds in times of the pandemic, after months of paralysis of the cinematographic activity, led many festivals to postponements, cancellations, and exhibitions online.

Both ‘Listen’ and ‘The Shift‘ are part of the competitive section Horizontes, one of the three official sections in Venice, and more focused on new talents and early works.

‘Listen’, a Portuguese-British co-production, is the first feature film by the actress and director Ana Rocha de Sousa and stars Lúcia Moniz, Ruben Garcia and Sophia Myles, being a drama about a Portuguese couple emigrated to London to whom social services take their children.

The fictional short film ‘The Shift’ is only Laura Carreira‘s second film, after ‘Red Hill’ (2018), and portrays the chronic dependence on work and the insecurity felt by so many.It is a reality that cinema should represent and I want my films to contribute to that.

The 77th edition of the festival opens with ‘Lacci‘, by the Italian Daniele Luchetti, out of competition for the Golden Lion.

The official competition includes, among others, ‘Nuevo Orden’, by Michel Franco, ‘Lovers’, by Nicole Garcia, ‘Laila In Haifa’, by Amos Gitai, ‘Wife of a Spy’, by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, and ‘Notturno’, by Gianfranco Rosi.

Out of competition, we highlight the inclusion of the Brazilian documentary ‘Narciso on vacation’, by Renato Terra and Ricardo Calil, about the musician Caetano Veloso.

The official competition jury is chaired by actress Cate Blanchett. Director Ann Hui and actress Tilda Swinton will be honored with the Career Golden Lion.
