The 2020 season of world cycling starts on February 19 at the 46th Volta ao Algarve on a bicycle that, once again, has the participation of the elite of the sport to cycle through the most challenging sections of the region, including the passage through São Brás from Alportel.
The first passage through the municipality is scheduled for the 21st. When crossing the EN2, cyclists will pass through the Machados site and arrive at São Brás de Alportel, for a steering wheel, in the North Circular. The organization’s calendar – the Portuguese Cycling Federation – estimates that cyclists will enter the municipality after 12:15 pm.
The adrenaline rush of the Volta ao Algarve by bicycle returns to São Brás de Alportel on Saturday, the 22nd, passing through Malhão, S. Romão, Alportel and EN2. The organization’s calendar estimates that cyclists make the route in the municipality between 14h50 and 15:20.
The 46th Tour of the Algarve by Bike has been, year after year, asserting itself in the competitive landscape of world cycling and is the queen event of this sport in the Algarve. Annually, it places the Algarve and the places it passes through in the sights of cycling lovers worldwide, through the most diverse means of communication, having shown great potential in the area of tourism promotion in the region.
Aware of the potential of this event for the region’s notoriety and attractiveness, the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel once again supports the initiative, under the responsibility of the Portuguese Cycling Federation.
In 2020, the Volta ao Algarve by bicycle counts a platoon of dreams: 7 Olympic, world and European champions in title, 2 runners of the top 10 in the world and 24 of the top 100.
“Volta ao Algarve has more than the competition to offer. It shows that the Algarve is an ideal destination for cycling throughout the year and attracts tourists who come cycling in the Algarve Granfondo Cofidis and many others who move on purpose to watch the race, filling hotels in low season. But Volta ao Algarve is also mobility. The presence of the project O Ciclismo Vai à Escola (Cycling Goes to School) and the Family Walk promotes the need for everyone to change behaviours, in defence of the environment ”, explains the president of the Portuguese Cycling Federation, Delmino Magalhães Pereira.
“For all these reasons, the Volta ao Algarve Cofidis is very important for Portuguese cycling and is an emblem of what we can call“ new cycling”, he concludes.
The 46th Volta ao Algarve em Bicicleta is organized by the Portuguese Cycling Federation and has the support of the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel.
