Writer João de Melo distinguished with the Cultural Merit Medal

The writer Joao de Melo receives the 12th Medal of Cultural Merit for his “invaluable work” literary, which has contributed to the promotion of Portuguese language and culture abroad, announced today the Ministry of Culture.

“In recognition of the invaluable work of a life dedicated to literary production and writing, to the best promotion of our Country abroad, both the Language and the Portuguese cultural identity, for more than fifty years, understands the Portuguese Government to pay public homage to the writer João de Melo, granting him the Cultural Merit Medal, “says the Ministry of Culture, in a note sent to the media.

The ceremony of delivery of the medal will take place next Tuesday, March 12, at 15:30, in Room D. João VI of Ajuda National Palace, in Lisbon.

The Azorean writer, born João Manuel de Melo Pacheco, on February 4, 1949, in Achadinha, parish of the county of Northeast, São Miguel Island, moved to the mainland at age 11, after finishing primary school.

He attended the seminary of the Dominicans – where he discovered his taste for reading and writing literature – until 1967, the year he lived in Lisbon, having resumed his studies at the same time as he worked in the civil service.

At the same time, João de Melo began a long and diversified collaboration in the cultural press, first in the Popular Diary and in the Diário de Lisboa (in which he published the first short stories at the age of 18), later in the literary magazines Signo, Aresta, Sílex , Africa, Read, Vertex, the Glacial supplement of the newspaper The Union, Colloquium / Letters, Letters ComVida, Southwest and many others.

His literary production for the cultural press was translated into poetry, short stories, literary criticism, essays, and opinion pieces.
