Youth Olympic Games Dakar’2022 postponed to 2026

The International Olympic Committee accepted the proposal of the President of the Republic of Senegal, for the postponement of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) from 2022 to 2026, in view of the responsibilities and the concern with efficiency imposed by the current circumstances.

The information is revealed by the Cape Verdean Olympic Committee (COC), explaining that President Macky Sall’s proposal was well received by IOC President Thomas Bach, after in-depth discussions on the subject, as the coronavirus pandemic did not only affect competitions short-term sporting activities.

The postponement of Dakar 2022 allows the IOC, the National Olympic Committees (NOC) and the International Federations (FI) to better plan their activities, which were strongly affected by the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, by the subsequent postponements of major sporting events and the operational and financial consequences of the global health crisis.

The IOC and Senegal understand that this news will be disappointing for many young athletes, so both sides appeal to their understanding, claiming that this agreement results from the large scale of the operational challenges that the IOC, NOCs and FIs face after the postponement. of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
